![]() Windows 10X was supposed to ship the following fall, so 20H2 ended up being an enablement package as well. With version 1909, Microsoft adopted a method of delivering updates that involved an enablement package, rather than delivering a full build of Windows. This should happen some time before the fall feature update.īefore that, there hadn't been a Magic Window since spring 2020, although before that, it used to happen twice a year. Now, we're once again testing full builds of Windows in the Dev channel, so we'll have to wait for a pause before the next Magic Window. That made it nice and easy to know that build 22000 was the RTM. Originally, Microsoft just released build 22000, and the rest was cumulative updates. Now, you have to wait for Dev to align with Beta, switch, and then wait for Beta to align with production.Įven now, the Dev channel is different from Windows 11 was initially in testing. There used to be a rare time that all channels would line up. This works a little bit differently than it used to. It's that brief period of time when the Insider Program lines up with the shipping version of Windows, and you can jump off of the preview train if you want to. If you were testing Windows 11 in the Dev channel, you could safely un-enroll your machine once there was another option, such as testing in the Beta channel. If you're in the Dev channel, you're on a newer build, so there's no way to easily just roll back without wiping your machine.īuild 22000 was a Magic Window. Because of that, the only way to roll back from a Windows 11 Insider Preview build is by clean installing the OS.įor example, Windows 11 version 21H2 is build 22000. When you check for updates in Windows Update, your PC pretty much sends your build number to a server, checks if there's something with a higher build number available for you, and delivers that update if there is one. There's a period of time in the Windows Insider Program that's become known as the 'Magic Window'.
